I was reading my local news site this morning when I came across an article about the recent activity on the St Helens Volcano in Washington state. I was slightly surprised to see no articles on Joeuser on this topic. The current situation seems to be that The volcano has now been sealed off, due to the highest level of activity since 1986. Earthquakes related to the volcano are now occurring at a rate of 3-4 a minute suggesting an erruption is imminent. Admittedly any eruption is expected to be small with possibly only the venting of gases and no lava. Certainly not effecting any area greater than 5 kilometers away, unless glacial waters are released.

I wonder if an erruption wil ltake place and how big will it be. Will lava find it's way to the surface?

I'd love to hear the views of those who live in the area on this. I tend to view volcanos as wonders of nature and find them very interesting. Probably a totally different view from those who live near them though.

I live about 2 hrs away from Mt. St. Helens and thankfully the predictions are that the blast radius, if it in fact erupts, is 3 miles. Also, based on the current weather conditions, the wind will not carry any soot in our direction but the way it looks now it will get deposited in the Columbia River NE around the Dalles area.

There is a live web cam site up that my wife was tracking earlier, sorry didn't get the link but it shouldn't be to hard to track down.

Well the valcano let loose on oct 1 at 11:45 am pacific time some steam a lttle ash, watching it is quiet beatiful in my opinion.
It is a treat to live so close to a live valcano. I live in portland, oregon. Besides that the northwest is a very beatiful place to live 1 hour to the coast, 1 hour to mt hood where you can ski year round only place in the continental united states.

I will keep you posted,
