the US government KNEW and did nothing

When I initially commented on the Iraqi pow treatment I blamed much of the problem on the US government. While I accepted that there were only a tiny number of soldiers mistreating prisoners I felt that it was a failure of the US system. I highlighted the fact that the government failed to provide soldiers with the Geneva convention requirements on treatment of soldiers, failed to give any training, failed to provide support, failed to provide leadership, and failed to provide supervision.

It now turns out that it was worse than that.

The US government was informed in January of prisoner abuses in Abu Ghraib prison. They comissioned a report. That report arrived in early March and is STILL sitting in Donald Rumsfeld intray unread. The report by Maj Gen Antonio Taguba found evidence of "sadistic, blatant, and wanton criminal abuses of Iraqi prisoners", including sexual abuse. They of course didn't bother informing the senate or the senate armed forces committee

The government knew and did nothing. They just didn't care. That's criminal. Not just emotionally but legally.

Further bad news on this front,

- The US-appointed human rights minister, Abdul-Basat al-Turki, resigned on Tuesday in protest at the abuses. Not even their own appointed ministers in Iraq trust them anymore.

- A lawyer for one of the soldiers allegedly involved in the abuse cases at Abu Ghraib said they were simply "following orders". Guy Womack, attorney for Charles Graner Jr, said the campaign was coordinated by governmental agencies, including the CIA. Even if untrue, this statement guarentees accusations of a cover up.

- The former head of the prison, Brig Gen Janis Karpinski, said she believed military commanders were trying to shift the blame onto her and other reservists and away from the intelligence officers still at work in the prison. Again raises big questions about who was responsible. Two separate brancehes of the military were in the prison but yet only 1 is being investigated. How did the intelligence officers NOT see what was going on.

i cant imagine why that particular prison was utilized for any purpose other than housing saddam himself.. absent that, it should have been razed and ultimately replaced by a memorial to those who suffered there under hussein.
